Prosperity Through Cooperation: A Success Story of Chhattisgarh
The state of Chhattisgarh has set a remarkable example of industrial growth and rural prosperity through cooperative initiatives. Cooperative sugar factories, established with active participation from farmers, have not only provided economic empowerment to sugarcane producers but have also created new avenues for industry, employment, and energy generation in rural areas.
The state’s first Bhoramdev Cooperative Sugar Factory (Kawardha) was established in 2002-03. Over the years, it has steadily expanded its capacity to 3,500 TCD and achieved self-reliance in electricity generation through a 12 MW co-generation plant. Following this path, Danteshwari Maiya (Balod), Maa Mahamaya (Ambikapur), and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Cooperative Factory (Pandaria) have strengthened the state’s sugar production capacity with their efficiency, innovation, and increased output.
Together, these four factories directly benefit nearly 57,537 farmer-shareholders. In 2023-24 alone, more than 43,000 hectares of sugarcane cultivation and over 1 million metric tons of sugarcane crushing were achieved, highlighting the success of this collective effort.
Chhattisgarh has also taken significant steps toward fuel self-reliance. The establishment of an 80 KLPD ethanol plant at Bhoramdev and a maize-based ethanol plant in Kondagaon has not only promoted biofuel production but also enhanced the value of farmers’ crops and created new employment opportunities.
Indeed, Chhattisgarh’s cooperative sugar and ethanol industries have become true drivers of rural prosperity—where farmers are not merely producers but active partners in industry. This is a living example of “Prosperity Through Cooperation,” strengthening the foundation of a self-reliant and progressive Chhattisgarh.
